Our Farm Practices

Low-Till & Minimal Disturbance

In the agricultural industry, this is often called no-till or low-till; in the home gardening world, it’s known as "no-dig." Regardless of the name, our philosophy remains the same: minimal soil disturbance. We believe in letting the soil be itself so that natural biology can work undisturbed. While we do lightly prep the top layer of our beds to incorporate amendments and ensure a loose surface for seeds and transplants, we follow a strict "shallow-as-needed" approach. By avoiding deep tillage, we protect the complex structures and organisms living beneath the surface.

A Commitment to No-Spray Growing

We strictly avoid synthetic chemical herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. This commitment is rooted in safety—for us as farmers, for our customers who consume our vegetables, and for the microbial life in our soil that sustains the farm. While we may utilize foliar nutrient sprays like compost teas or natural minerals (such as magnesium), and organic-approved solutions like neem oil when necessary, we never use products derived from the petro-chemical industry.

Feeding the Soil, Not the Crop

We don't "fertilize" our crops in the traditional sense; instead, we feed the soil. By providing natural substances like compost, chicken manure, alfalfa, bone meal, and kelp, we power a diverse ecosystem of bacteria and fungi. These microbes break down proteins to release essential macro and micro-nutrients—such as nitrogen, potassium, calcium, and iron—in a form that plants can easily absorb.

Why Natural Fertility Matters

We avoid chemical-based fertilizers because they often force rapid growth at the expense of quality. While synthetic inputs can boost yields, they frequently lead to a "dilution effect," resulting in weaker flavors and lower nutrient densities. Furthermore, chemical fertilizers can cause imbalances in soil microbe populations, causing some species to boom while others crash. By relying on organic biology, we produce healthier, more resilient plants that naturally defend against pests and diseases, resulting in vegetables that are superior in both taste and nutrition.
